How does a servo motor turn?

A standard servo moves on a rotation arc (usually 0-90° or 0-180°) and provides positional feedback to the controller. This lets you move it to a specific point on the rotation arc and the servo reports its position back to the controller.

Are servo motors DC or AC?

Servos operate using 3 phase drives. The drives use PWM (pulse width modulated) voltage, which means the 3 legs are timed accordingly to ensure the motor commutates smoothly. Some drives raise and lower voltage to attain the proper RPM, and some drives keep the voltage constant, and vary the hertz (cycles) to raise and lower speeds much like you would keep a specific voltage on DC fields, and raise and lower armature volts to attain speed. Motors labeled “DC servo” DC motors with permanent magnet fields, with brushes and an armature. They will also have some kind of feedback device, such as a Tachometer, resolver, or an encoder; and sometimes a combination of feedback devices.

Can a servo spin continuously?

A continuous rotation servo motor can rotate continuously, like a wheel. This type of servo motor can be made to rotate in either direction (clockwise or counterclockwise).
